There are events to be a part of, writing to do, and worlds to create! If you’re looking for challenges, communities, and chances that can help you become a better writer. If you’d like more information about any of these, check out their websites or ask me on Twitter/Twitch.

The Writer’s Games

Run by The Writer’s Workout

The Writer’s Games is a single-writer challenge competition held twice a year, spread across two months. Registered participants are given a prompt with 2 core concepts (such as plot, character growth, or dialogue) and must plot, write, edit, and submit their short stories in 72 hours.

Opportunities: honest feedback from multiple sources, core concept focus, open to genre writing

Obstacles: strict deadlines, mandatory prompt, some genres closed by request (fanfiction, pandemic, political, religious, etc.)

#Preptober

Idea by NaNoWriMo; Run by CoffeeQuills

#Preptober is the idea that writers wanting to participate in National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) can use October as a planning period for character profiles, world building, and plotting (everything except writing).

Opportunities: know what you’re writing so that you don’t need to take the time to plot/build during November

Obstacles: planning may not help during NaNo, a story may lose luster after too much planning

4thewords Event

Run by 4thewords

Writing daily can be a fun habit and with the year’s grand event going on, a Dust Warrior can get many wearable rewards, a special badge for participating, and can work on their story after the month ends.

Opportunities: joining an encourging and supportive community, getting into a daily writing habit, winning avatar rewards

Obstacles: many quests during the event may mean picking & choosing which to finish
